LEGOLAND - Red Torso, Blue Legs, Blue Cowboy Hat

The red torso, blue legs, and cowboy-style hat give this mid-1970s LEGOLAND figure more personality than its extremely simple body should logically support. That was the design challenge before the articulated minifigure: LEGO needed tiny people to enliven model towns, but had only a limited vocabulary of rigid bodies, colors, and headwear. Strong contrasting colors helped individual figures read clearly from across a play table, while the hat suggested occupation or story. The result feels closer to a symbol of a person than a miniature character. Yet only a few years later, LEGO would preserve roughly this scale while revolutionizing everything about how its little people moved and interacted.
