Vintage Minnie

Released in 2019 as part of Disney Collectible Minifigures Series 2, Vintage Minnie returns Minnie Mouse to the black-and-white world of Steamboat Willie and Disney’s earliest sound cartoons.

Her monochrome color palette, simple skirt, oversized shoes, white gloves, and tiny flowered hat deliberately evoke Minnie’s late-1920s appearance rather than the brightly colored character familiar from later Disney animation. LEGO completes the nautical connection with a white life preserver, pairing naturally with Vintage Mickey and his ship’s steering wheel.

Minnie debuted alongside Mickey in Steamboat Willie in November 1928. Although the short was not the first Mickey cartoon produced, it was the first one released to audiences and became famous for its synchronized sound—helping establish Mickey and Minnie as two of animation’s earliest international stars.

The figure arrived during an especially notable year for LEGO and Steamboat Willie. Just weeks earlier, LEGO Ideas had released set 21317 Steamboat Willie, a larger black-and-white recreation of the famous riverboat complete with its own Mickey and Minnie figures. The Collectible Minifigure versions are distinct rather than simple duplicates, but together the releases formed an unusually concentrated LEGO tribute to Disney’s earliest screen history.

Minnie is particularly important to that history because she was there from the beginning. She was not a character added after Mickey became successful; the two entered public consciousness together. Her role in Steamboat Willie helped establish the pairing that would remain central to Disney imagery for nearly a century.

More than ninety years later, remarkably little is needed to recognize her. The round ears, flowered hat, skirt, gloves, and expressive face survive the transition from hand-drawn black-and-white animation to a tiny injection-molded figure almost effortlessly.

Paired with Vintage Mickey, this minifigure is more than a nostalgic version of a familiar character. It is a miniature tribute to the moment when Mickey and Minnie first sailed onto movie screens—and when two simple animated characters began becoming enduring symbols of Disney itself.
