LEGOLAND / 1975

LEGOLAND - Black Torso, Black Legs, White Hat, White Belt

MinifiguresOfficial LEGO

This 1975–76 police figure comes from the strange and important period immediately before the modern minifigure. The body is recognizable as a person but lacks the articulated arms, separate legs, expressive face, and grasping hands introduced in 1978. Instead, color and a few costume cues do nearly all the work: black uniform, white belt, white cap. These rigid LEGOLAND figures functioned almost like architectural scale markers or stage extras placed into cars, streets, and stations. Their limitations make them historically valuable. LEGO could already build a world around people; what it had not yet invented was the tiny articulated actor capable of truly interacting with that world.
