BB-8 (Large Photoreceptor and Small Black Circle)

BB-8 presented LEGO designers with a very different droid problem from R2-D2: the character is essentially a rolling sphere with a smaller dome balanced on top. LEGO's solution uses specialized curved elements while preserving connection points and compatibility with the wider system. This version updates the photoreceptor and surrounding markings, showing the same incremental refinement seen across long-running Star Wars characters. BB-8 is also a useful marker of generational change in the franchise itself—an instantly recognizable droid created for the sequel era, translated into a LEGO vocabulary established years before the character existed.
