LEGOLAND - Red Torso, Blue Legs, Black Pigtails Hair

This red-torso LEGOLAND figure with black pigtails belongs to the brief pre-minifigure generation of the mid-1970s. The head is blank, the torso rigid, and the arms and legs cannot pose like those of a modern minifigure, so hair and color carry almost the entire burden of characterization. That makes the pigtail element historically important: before printed eyelashes, smiles, uniforms, or individualized faces, headgear could be the clearest signal of identity. Within a few years LEGO would solve the problem with the 1978 minifigure, but figures like this show the design questions that came first.
