Chester Chimp comes from Fabuland, LEGO's wonderfully strange experiment in combining construction toys with a cast of recurring storybook characters. Introduced in 1979, Fabuland traded the anonymous smile of the standard minifigure for oversized animal heads, named personalities, and a world designed to feel like a children's picture book built from bricks. This 1981 monkey captures the theme at its peak: unmistakably LEGO, yet unlike almost anything the company made before or since. Fabuland helped prove that a LEGO theme could be more than a setting—it could be a continuing fictional universe.
