Wondrous Weightlifter

With his lifting belt, competition gear, and heroic expression, the Wondrous Weightlifter turns Olympic strength into classic minifigure caricature. He was one of the figures in the 2012 Team GB series celebrating the London Games, a rare moment when Collectible Minifigures became a direct souvenir of a current international event. Weightlifting is especially well suited to LEGO’s chunky proportions: the rigid torso and cylindrical hands already suggest compact strength. The result is less a portrait of one athlete than a playful monument to the event itself—real sport translated into the exaggerated visual grammar of LEGO people.
