LEGO MRI Scanner
Unlike most LEGO sets, the MRI Scanner was never intended for store shelves. Its story began in 2015 as a passion project between a LEGO employee and Denmark’s Odense University Hospital, eventually evolving into an official LEGO model distributed to hospitals worldwide. Featuring a detailed MRI machine, examination areas, and minifigure patients and medical staff, the set helps children understand what to expect during an MRI scan through hands-on play. By making an intimidating medical procedure more familiar, it has helped reduce anxiety and even the need for sedation. More than 10,000 sets have been donated, benefiting over one million children by 2025. A remarkable example of how LEGO bricks can make a meaningful difference far beyond the playroom.

THE COLLECTOR’S NOTES
Its place in the collection.
From the moment I learned about the LEGO MRI Scanner, I knew it was a set I wanted in my collection. Not only is it incredibly rare, but its unique design and the story behind its creation make it one of the coolest LEGO sets ever produced. However, I have always believed that every one of these sets belongs exactly where LEGO intended it to be: in hospitals, helping children feel more comfortable during an otherwise frightening experience. I could never justify purchasing one that had been taken from a hospital or diverted from its intended purpose simply to add it to my collection. Fortunately, I found another way. I was able to source the original digital building instructions and painstakingly track down every single piece, ensuring each was brand new and an exact match to the original. Piece by piece, I recreated the complete set without taking a single brick away from the children it was designed to help. This is one of the most meaningful additions to my collection. It represents not only the joy of collecting something rare and remarkable, but also my belief that some LEGO sets serve a purpose far more important than sitting on a collector’s shelf. I’m proud to have this model in my museum, and even prouder of how it got here.
