Knight's Tournament
Released in 1979, Knight’s Tournament was one of the earliest expansions of LEGO’s newly created Castle world. Rather than introducing another fortress, the set brought that world to life through ceremony and competition: knights on horseback, spectators beneath a striped pavilion, heraldic colors, and the spectacle of a medieval tournament.
Its relationship with the famous 375 Yellow Castle was more than thematic. Period LEGO advertising actually pictured Knight’s Tournament directly in front of the Yellow Castle, presenting the sets together as parts of the same medieval scene. In those advertisements, the castle became the backdrop while the tournament unfolded outside its walls—a remarkably early example of LEGO encouraging children to combine individual sets into a larger shared world.
That makes Knight’s Tournament particularly important in the development of LEGO Castle. The Yellow Castle established the kingdom; this set helped show what could happen within it. LEGO was beginning to move beyond individual models toward something much larger: recurring characters, environments, activities, and stories that could continue from one box to another.
The set also preserves many distinctive features of LEGO’s earliest Castle era, including brick-built horses, brightly colored heraldry, and the wonderfully stylized knights that predated the more realistic gray castles and molded horses of the 1980s. Later Castle themes would develop named factions, enormous fortresses, and increasingly elaborate medieval worlds, but Knight’s Tournament captures that idea at its beginning—a small set helping transform a single yellow castle into an entire kingdom.
