The LEGO NINJAGO Movie / 2017
Spinner
The Spinner distills The LEGO NINJAGO Movie’s action into one wonderfully simple mechanical idea. Rather than depicting a temple, vehicle, or location from the film, the 23-piece model turns movement itself into the subject: a minifigure stands at the center while the hand-powered mechanism emphasizes spinning, balance, and the exaggerated martial-arts motion that has defined NINJAGO from the beginning.
Released in 2017 alongside The LEGO NINJAGO Movie, TLNM-1 was not a normal boxed retail set. In the United States, it was offered as a promotional gift with a $50 purchase at LEGOLAND Discovery Centers during October 2017, packaged in a simple zip-lock bag. That limited distribution helps explain both its unusual catalog number and its relative obscurity compared with the movie’s much larger retail releases.
Its design also connects the film to one of NINJAGO’s oldest play patterns. Spinning toys had been part of the theme since its earliest years, translating the fictional art of Spinjitzu into something children could physically perform. The Movie-era Spinner reduces that concept almost to its essentials: no large environment is required—the character, rotational motion, and the act of launching the spin become the entire experience.
For such a small promotional item, it captures an important part of NINJAGO’s identity. The theme has always existed somewhere between construction toy, character story, and action game, and the Spinner compresses all three into an object that only really comes alive when it moves.
