NEXO KNIGHTS / 2016
Clay Moorington - Dark Blue Helmet, Flat Silver Visor and Armor
Released in 2016, Clay Moorington was the leader of the five young heroes at the center of LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS, one of LEGO’s more unusual experiments with the Castle formula. Rather than recreate a traditional medieval kingdom, NEXO KNIGHTS imagined the Kingdom of Knighton as a place where knights, castles, swords, and heraldry existed alongside advanced technology, armored vehicles, digital magic, and computer systems.
Clay leads fellow knights Macy Halbert, Lance Richmond, Aaron Fox, and Axl under the guidance of Merlok 2.0, a powerful wizard who exists in digital form. Their original enemies were Jestro, the Book of Monsters, and an army of Lava Monsters. The result was a world that looked simultaneously medieval and futuristic—less knights-versus-dragons than knights equipped for a high-tech fantasy battlefield.
That combination is especially visible in this 2016 version of Clay. His armor retains the basic silhouette of a traditional armored knight, but nearly every detail has been reinterpreted through a science-fiction lens. Flat-silver armor surrounds a dark-blue helmet and pointed visor, while translucent orange shoulder details, angular blue plating, and printed circuitry run across his torso and legs. At the center of the armor is Clay’s blue falcon emblem, functioning like a futuristic version of the heraldic crests carried by LEGO Castle knights decades earlier.
NEXO KNIGHTS carried that idea even further through its distinctive shield system. Physical shield designs appearing in LEGO sets could be scanned into the Merlok 2.0 mobile game to unlock digital “NEXO Powers.” LEGO was deliberately trying to connect the object in a child’s hand with the game on a screen, making the knights’ colorful shields simultaneously pieces of armor, collectible symbols, and digital game codes.
That philosophy helps explain why NEXO KNIGHTS minifigures have such a distinctive appearance. They are recognizably descended from LEGO Castle, but they were never intended to look historically medieval. Their armor is exaggerated, brightly accented, heavily printed, and filled with technological details. The figures often feel closer to miniature science-fiction action figures built on a minifigure body than conventional LEGO knights.
This particular Clay Moorington—BrickLink ID nex010—appeared in only three sets during the theme’s first year. Even removed from the larger NEXO KNIGHTS story, the figure captures the theme remarkably well: a knight with a visor, armor, and heraldic crest, redesigned as though the Middle Ages somehow continued directly into the digital age.
For collectors who encounter NEXO KNIGHTS years after its original run, that strange combination may be its greatest strength. The theme took two familiar LEGO languages—Castle and futuristic technology—and collided them without much restraint. Clay Moorington is a particularly good example of the result: intricate, colorful, unmistakably LEGO, and unlike almost any knight that came before him.
