Vintage Mickey

MinifiguresOfficial LEGO

Released in 2019 as part of Disney Collectible Minifigures Series 2, Vintage Mickey is LEGO’s tribute to Mickey Mouse as he appeared in Steamboat Willie, the landmark 1928 animated short that helped launch Mickey as an international icon.

The figure strips Mickey back to the stark black, white, and gray palette of early sound-era animation. His simple shorts, oversized shoes, round ears, and monochrome face deliberately evoke the hand-drawn character audiences first encountered at the end of the 1920s. LEGO reinforces the connection by giving him a ship’s steering wheel—the defining visual reference to Mickey at the helm in Steamboat Willie.

Although LEGO officially named the minifigure “Vintage Mickey,” this is not simply a generalized retro interpretation. It is specifically modeled after the Steamboat Willie era, translating one of animation history’s most recognizable images into minifigure form.

The figure also arrived in the same year as LEGO Ideas set 21317 Steamboat Willie, which recreated the famous riverboat scene in black and white. Together, the releases marked an unusually direct LEGO tribute to Mickey’s earliest screen identity.

More than ninety years after the original short debuted, remarkably little is needed to identify him: round ears, white gloves, buttoned shorts, and a ship’s wheel. Vintage Mickey demonstrates how quickly that visual language became permanent—and how enduring the image of Mickey at the helm remains in Disney history.
